How to Prepare Data for Coupling Selection
A practical checklist for sending torque, speed, shaft, displacement and installation information.
Answer first
A useful coupling inquiry begins with the actual duty and both shaft interfaces. A model name alone is rarely enough for a safe preliminary review.
Minimum operating data
- Driving and driven equipment
- Power, normal speed and maximum speed
- Nominal, peak and starting torque where available
- Start-stop frequency, reversing, shock and braking conditions
- Radial, axial and angular displacement
Connection and space data
- Shaft diameters at both ends
- Shaft-extension and bore lengths
- Bore and keyway forms
- Maximum outside diameter and overall length
- Maintenance and dismantling clearance
Additional data for cardan shafts
State the installed length, required telescopic movement, operating angle, swing-diameter clearance, flange pilot and bolt-hole dimensions, phasing requirements, nominal torque and fatigue torque.
