How to Prepare Data for Coupling Selection

A practical checklist for sending torque, speed, shaft, displacement and installation information.

Published Last reviewed Aug 27, 2026

Answer first

A useful coupling inquiry begins with the actual duty and both shaft interfaces. A model name alone is rarely enough for a safe preliminary review.

Minimum operating data

  1. Driving and driven equipment
  2. Power, normal speed and maximum speed
  3. Nominal, peak and starting torque where available
  4. Start-stop frequency, reversing, shock and braking conditions
  5. Radial, axial and angular displacement

Connection and space data

  1. Shaft diameters at both ends
  2. Shaft-extension and bore lengths
  3. Bore and keyway forms
  4. Maximum outside diameter and overall length
  5. Maintenance and dismantling clearance

Additional data for cardan shafts

State the installed length, required telescopic movement, operating angle, swing-diameter clearance, flange pilot and bolt-hole dimensions, phasing requirements, nominal torque and fatigue torque.

Boundary

Preliminary family screening does not replace final engineering confirmation. Current standards, material, balancing, heat treatment, service life and contractual performance must be confirmed for the selected product and duty.
